WebCT (Blackboard - CE.): Firewall Information

What happens if some of the class features of WebCT (renamed Blackboard - CE) do not work properly?
Check to see if this is a firewall or a pop-up blocker problem.  If you are using a work place computer, try accessing the class from your home computer (many employers have firewalls designed to prevent access to interactive websites). If you continue to have difficulties with any of the features of WebCT such as opening messages or accessing quizzes, try accessing the class through the Open Computer Lab on campus. The campus labs are configured to work with all of our courseware and if your course operates properly on campus then you will need to explore your personal computer settings.  If you continue to experience problems using any of the WebCT features please check in with the Distance Learning Office 206-527-3738 or (distance@sccd.ctc.edu) for more help.

Additional Firewall problems:

Internet Providers: If you continue to experience problems logging on to WebCT and you are certain you have not installed a firewall on your personal computer please check with your Internet Provider to make sure that your modem does not have an internal firewall or that your IPS has a dedicated firewall installed at their base.  It has come to our attention that some DSL modems may have built in firewalls for added protection.  If this is the case you will need to contact your Internet Provider and ask for their help in overcoming this problem there may be a setting that either you can change or that your IPS will be able to change at their end.

Wireless connections at Internet Cafes: or other places where you do not have knowledge of the Internet Provider can indeed be the cause of errors and there are several reasons.

  • Internet Cafes have different security needs and uses than you would need on your own personal internet set up.  They may have a higher level of firewall protection which will block your ability to connect to a dedicated server.

  • Internet Cafes may have instituted a time out on inactivity which cuts contact when web pages have not been accessed within a certain timeframe. You may be timed out because WebCT remains open at a single URL and this may not qualify for their timing protocol.  A possible solution would be to open a web browser and periodically access it to keep your session active.
