FirstClass Preferences:
If you
want to change defaults for your FirstClass options you can select the
Preferences dialog box. This option is located from the menu by selecting
Edit > Preferences (located at the bottom of the
list) once the Preferences dialog box appears
select the Content tab. The following dialog box shows you the options for
changing user preferences.
The
Normal text selection will allow you to customize your messaging type face,
size and color. This dialog box will also allow you to set preferences for
the Spell Check feature. The View tab will allow you to set preferences for
the type style of incoming text messages.
The Preferences dialog
box will also allow the user to set up a Mail Signature located within the
Messaging tab. The Messaging tab also allows the user to set up Chat
preferences.

Tool Bars:
FirstClass allows the
user to customize their toolbars. This is a very convenient way to set
up your Desktop and messaging toolbars to allow you to simply click an icon
to perform repetitive tasks. You access this feature by selecting from
the menu View > Toolbars > Customize Toolbars which is
located at the end of the View menu selection.
A dialog box will
appear that will offer you several selections of Tool
Categories and within each Category you will have a selection of
Tool Bar icons.

After determining your
needs select from the categories listed, you simply drag and drop the
selected tool onto your toolbar. The Spacer item at the right of the
Categories will allow you to organize the toolbar as desired. If you find
you no longer need a button you can remove it by again accessing this
dialog box and simply dragging it from your tool bar back to its location
within this box. You will also always be able to access all of the tools
by selecting from the menu. Some features are also accessed by right
clicking (Windows) or Cmd click (Mac).
Another nice feature of
the toolbar is your ability to view the icons simply as icons or to Display
Icons and Text. You will locate this feature by selecting from the menu
View > Toolbars > Display Icons and Text. This will extend your toolbar
somewhat but will insure easy selection. You will also find that by
hovering over the icon a description of the icon will pop up.
Realtime Chat using NSCC FirstClass:
Chat is a realtime online
conversation among participants that are currently logged on to the NSCC
FirstClass server. The chat window shows a transcript of everyones
contributions to the chat.
There are two types of
Chats available.
1. Private Chats
are those an individual can start and invite others to participate. To
start a private chat select from the menu Collaborate > Private Chat

The dialog
box shown above will open and you click on the Invite button to bring up the
directory of those users who are currently online. You can select from this
directory those you would like to invite to your private chat. These users
will receive an invitation to chat and they can accept or decline. If the
users name is in italic this means that they have changed their preferences
to not accept invitations to chat.
2. Public Chats are created by the administrator and are usually used
in a subconference to discuss a specific topic at a designated time. A
Public Chat icon will appear in your subconference and to join the chat
double click on the icon.
It is possible to archive a Chat Session for review at a later time.
1. Do not close the chat session when it is complete. Place the cursor at
the bottom of the chat screen.
2. From the menu select Edit > Select All after the text is highlighted
select Edit > Copy.
3. Open a new message form in a selected subconference or folder.
4. From the menu select Edit > Paste and the contents of the transcript will
be placed into the message. Send the message and it will then be accessible
at a later time.
