FirstClass Tutorial: Messaging Extras

Printable Version

Threaded Messages:
If two or more people want to interact regarding a specific topic and want to keep their messages linked together FirstClass offers Threaded Messages. This is accomplished by one person starting the discussion and then the next person Replying (Ctrl+R) to the original message. This will give the reply the same subject but there will be a prefix Re: included to indicate that it is a response to the original message. If a third person responds to the second message using "Reply To" there will be a prefix of Re(2) indicating it is the next response. This will continue as more participants respond to the last message.

Related Threaded Messages can be found by accessing Collaborate > Navigation from the menu. This will allow you to see all related messages even if they are not grouped together in your Mailbox.

In this example the minus sign in the box shows an opened tree of a Threaded discussion.

Message History:
Information is available about the history of a message. The top of each message states the time and date the message was sent. If you want more information such as who has read or replied to the message you can obtain that by selecting the message and then:

1. Select Message > History from the menu
2. A box will appear with the What When and Who of your selected message.

Searching for Messages:

FirstClass offers a “Find” function if you want to locate messages from or to a certain individual as well as key words in a message.

1. Enter the subconference you want to query.
2. Select Edit > Find from the menu.
3. In the Find: box type in the pertinent information
4. Select the areas to be searched
5. Click on the Find button

The results of the Find will be displayed and any of the messages can be opened from this box by double clicking.

Attaching Files to Messages:

1. Create your message as shown above.
2. Click on File – Attach File or you can click on the paper clip icon on your tool bar.
3. A dialog box will open that is labeled “Upload File” this will give you access to the files on your personal computer. Select the file you want to attach and click on the “Open” button. A small box will appear that is processing your file transfer and then the name of the file that you attached will show up in your email above the text body in a field labeled Attachments.

Deleting and Restoring objects:

It is possible to delete FirstClass objects including sent messages, documents and folders, if you have been granted that permission. To delete an object you must first select it from the menu choose File > Delete or you can press the delete key on your keyboard.

When you delete an object it is not immediately removed from the server but it is marked for deletion and the server administrator will perform this function on an undetermined schedule. This is much like placing the item in the trash on your operating system desktop. As a result it is possible to “undelete” the item. It is best to undelete the item before you exit from your current FirstClass session to insure that the item will still be available. To undelete an object select it and from the menu choose File > Undelete. It is important to be certain that you want to delete the object and you should always retain backup copies of important documents or presentations in a safe location. If you store your only copy of important documents on the NSCC FirstClass server you must understand that there is a possibility of a server failure and these documents would be lost.
