What is General Psychology?
General Psychology (PSY 110D) is an introduction to the study of human
behavior, including learning and thinking, development, perception,
motivation, emotion, personality and individual differences, social and
abnormal behavior and research methods. It is a course that surveys the
discipline of Psychology. This course is equivalent to the General
Psychology (Psy 110) course offered each quarter on campus at NSCC. It is
available for students who, for various reasons, cannot attend classes on
campus on a regular basis. If you have good independent study skills you
can get the same quality education students get on the campus at NSCC.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course you should be able to:
1.Define psychology and explain how the focus of psychology is different
from that of other social and biological sciences.
2.Describe the major features of the scientific method and explain the
steps and key considerations in research.
3.Critically analyze information about human behavior and distinguish
between conclusions supported by scientific evidence and conclusions based
on nonscientific ways of knowing.
4.Define basic psychological terminology and explain important features of
major psychological concepts and theories.
5.Explain how biological, psychological, and social factors can affect
behavior.
6.Identify and describe specific psychological principles in real-life
situations
You should also learn to:
1.Appreciate how psychology can enrich and help to explain individual
experience and social interaction.
2.Appreciate similarities and differences between individuals.
3.Appreciate how culture, gender, and other group identities can influence
self-awareness and interactions between people.
4.Appreciate that various information sources differ as to quality and
reliability.
5.Appreciate that our understanding of human behavior has evolved and
changed over the years and that increasingly refined psychological
theories have been developed.
